Managing the Stress of Caregiving

If you care for a family member or loved one, chances are good that you also feel stressed at times. Studies show that experiencing stress is not just unpleasant, but it can negatively affect your health, well-being, and ability to provide care. Managing your stress will improve your physical and mental health to benefit yourself, your loved one, and others who depend on you.

Here are some tips to help manage the stress of caregiving:

Take Care of Your Health

  • Eat nutritious meals
  • Get enough sleep
  • Exercise regularly
  • Get regular medical checkups

Involve Others

  • Make a list of jobs that you need help with., Ask friends, neighbors and other family members if they could give some time to help out.

Maintain Social Contacts

  • Having fun, laughing, and focusing on something other than your problems helps you keep an emotional balance.

Get Help from Community Services and Organizations

  • Hospice Care in Westchester & Putnam has a wonderful volunteer program that can help with caregiving support by visiting patients, assisting with errands, and   offering respite visits
