Say goodbye to “winter blues” as the new year blooms!

Now that the holiday chaos is over, many of us are left feeling a little down.  However, there are many uplifting approaches to welcoming a new year and saying goodbye to the post holiday blues!

  1. Be flexible: Not all events in our lives are either happy or sad. Even the most awful events can offer a source of some good. Try to see all experiences as an opportunity for growth.
     
  2. Accept the winter blues: If you notice that you are feeling a little down, understand this is a normal response to the rush of the holiday season as well as the cold and dark winter.
     
  3. Move: Increasing your activeness and exercise throughout the day can provide an excellent mood booster. Daily activity as well as being proactive distracts you from feeling the negative effects of the winter.
     
  4. Think positive: Instead of focusing on the negative emotions which can undoubtedly result from the winter, work on changing your thoughts to more positive ones. Shift away from “I hate winter” to “What can I do today to feel better.” 
     
  5. Don’t be a victim: If you focus too much of your energy on being victimized, you do not allow yourself to see the good that can come out of the situation or on what you can be doing instead. Victims tend to suffer more.
     
  6. Exposure to sunlight: Don’t be intimidated by the cold. If there is brightness outdoors, you can bundle up and go outdoors to enjoy it.
     
  7. Eat healthy: If you feel good about what you are putting into your body – you begin to feel good about yourself, and as if you are in control. Don’t rely on foods that make you feel good temporarily, but leave you feeling unhappy after.  
     
  8. Surround yourself with good supports: Be around people who care about you and supply you with love, respect, and encouragement.
     
  9. Sleep: Sleep can play a big part in your attitude throughout the day. You should try to get eight hours of sleep a night.
     
  10. Focus on new goals: Goals keep you going and provide purpose which keeps our mood up.
